Dayum! Da whole building shake!

Popped my magnum cherry today.

There were a couple of homeboys in the next lane over, shooting .45s.

Blazer Brass 158 gr. JHP / Ruger SP-101 3 1/16 in. barrel.

Five rounds fired, three hit the paper, and no, I am not going to tell you the distance.

My startled range neighbors reaction just about sums it up.

Can it be done?

Yes. I suppose so. The gun did not, in fact, fly out of my hand.

Will it be done, by me, anytime soon?

No.:no_ma:

.357 as a viable defense round in a small frame revolver?

Not if its me pulling the trigger . . .

Get it ported and use 38+p's. Worked on my smith 357 snubbie.

3" barrel really makes it hard to hit the paper, even at 15 feet (at least for me) - I figure the snubbie will come in handy when I have a gun fight in an elevator!

CHANGE THE GRIP

Find one that fits your hand and allows you to HOLD onto your weapon

you will find that with some minor practice you can pick it up and put all five in AT LEAST the 8 ring in a full sized target at 10 yrds

MOST gunfights occur at a distance of 7 ft or less

TOTAL number of rounds fired is THREE (all rounds fired by both parties)

I think Ponces words ring true again

IF YOU CAN'T HOLD IT, YOU DON'T OWN IT

OK, a little off, but you know what I mean...

The Ruger SP101 IS a handful with the smaller grip. Take it to a gun show and peruse the tables that belong to the company that sells only grips. MOST large shows have at least one vendor who does that.

For less than $100 you will find a pair of grips you just fall in love with. You will like the way the gun fits your hand, you will love the way they look and you will be VERY happy once you start shooting this fine weapon again at the range

It is then just practice practice practice

How do I know this?

been there, done that - I actually shoot the Rossi soft grips very well

That may be fine for the range or recreational shooting but that has huge disadvantages during a gun fight chief among them:

If you are a situation where you have to "just get a shot off" the odds are you'll probally blind yourself because of the increased muzzle flash due to the porting also the risk of burning yourself is very high if you have to "shoot from the hip"

Thankfully, .38+p isn't a problem in a stock (25 oz.) Ruger.

I have shot various ported guns and even at night did not notice a difference in muzzle flash as far as vision goes, I have also shot them from a low position without burning myself tho I will say there was slightly more noticeable muzzle blast.

Heavy magnum caliber from snubbies aren't fun, I have shot them a number of times for testing and paid the price the next day. The nastiest I have tried is the 45 Super out of my 2 1/2 inch Airweight 325PD. Carry what you feel you can manage and hit with...if it's +P 38 that's fine...better a hit with that than a miss with a .357.

The exact grain bullet that was used by my buddy I cant recall but he said there was a pretty high muzzle flash from his ported side arm.
